What two-factor authentication does

Two-factor authentication adds a six-digit, time-based code from an authenticator app to your normal Vega sign-in. It protects the account if someone learns your password.

Your organization may require this protection. When it is required and has not yet been configured, Vega asks you to complete setup during sign-in.

Before you begin

Install an authenticator app that supports time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) on a device you control. Make sure that device’s date and time are set automatically; an incorrect clock can cause valid-looking codes to be rejected.

Never share the QR code, manual setup key, or six-digit code. The QR code and manual key can be used to generate future sign-in codes.

Set it up during sign-in

If Vega requires setup after you enter your normal sign-in details:

  1. Open your authenticator app and choose its option to add an account.
  2. Scan the QR code shown by Vega. If scanning is unavailable, enter the displayed manual setup key instead.
  3. Find the new Vega entry in the authenticator app.
  4. Enter its current six-digit code in Authentication code.
  5. Confirm the setup.
  6. Wait for Vega to finish signing you in.

If the code expires while you are typing it, wait for the next code and try again.

Enable it from your user profile

  1. Sign in to Vega.
  2. Expand Admin in the left navigation.
  3. Select User profile.
  4. Find Two-factor authentication and select Enable.
  5. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app, or use the Manual setup key.
  6. Enter the current six-digit Authentication code.
  7. Select Confirm.
  8. Check that the status changes to Enabled.

For security, changing this setting requires a recent sign-in. If Vega shows that message, sign out, sign in again, and repeat the steps promptly.

Sign in after setup

  1. Enter your usual Vega sign-in details.
  2. On Two-factor authentication, open your authenticator app.
  3. Enter the current six-digit code.
  4. Select Verify and sign in.

Each code is valid only briefly. If verification fails, check that you selected the correct authenticator entry and that the device time is accurate, then use the next code.

Disable two-factor authentication

Disable it only if your organization’s policy allows it:

  1. Sign in recently, or sign out and back in first.
  2. Open Admin > User profile.
  3. Find Two-factor authentication and select Disable.
  4. Confirm the action when prompted.
  5. Check that the status changes to Disabled.

The Disable button is unavailable when a system administrator requires two-factor authentication. Contact the person responsible for your organization’s Vega access if you need help in that case.

If you lose access to the authenticator

Do not create a second Vega account to work around the sign-in challenge. Contact your organization’s Vega administrator or support contact so they can verify your identity and follow the approved account-recovery process.
